Security types
Choosing the right WiFi security setting
The security type is part of the encoded payload, not a setting on our end. Picking the wrong one is the single most common reason a WiFi QR code scans but fails to connect.
WPA / WPA2 / WPA3
The right choice for essentially every modern router. If your network asks for a password and you have not changed the defaults, this is what you have.
WEP
A legacy standard kept only for old hardware. It is cryptographically broken, so treat any WEP network as public.
None (open)
For genuinely open guest networks. The password field is ignored and the code simply joins the named network.
Where to use it
Print it once and leave it up
Because the network name and password are stored in the code itself, a WiFi QR code keeps working for as long as those credentials stay the same. There is no redirect to break and no subscription to lapse. Cafes put them on table tents, holiday rentals frame them by the door, and offices tape them inside reception desks.
Print at 2cm or larger and test the scan from about 30cm before you commit to a run. If the code will be laminated or placed behind glass, keep the contrast high — the diagnostics panel above flags any colour combination that drops below a 4.5:1 ratio.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About WiFi QR Codes
How does a WiFi QR code actually connect a phone to the network?
The QR code encodes a standard WIFI: payload containing your network name, password, and security type. When a phone camera reads it, the operating system recognises the format and offers a one-tap join prompt, so no one has to type your password manually.
Does a WiFi QR code work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes. iOS 11 and later and Android 10 and later both read the WIFI: payload natively from the built-in camera app. Older Android devices may need a dedicated QR scanner app, but the encoded data is identical.
Is my WiFi password sent to your servers?
Never. The QR code is generated entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your network name and password are never transmitted, logged, or stored anywhere, which is why this tool is safe to use for private and business networks.
Which security type should I choose for my WiFi QR code?
Choose WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for virtually all modern routers, which is the default on home and business networks. Select WEP only for legacy hardware, and choose None for genuinely open guest networks with no password.
Can I print a WiFi QR code for a cafe or guest room?
Yes, and it will not expire. Download the vector SVG for crisp printing at any size, from a table tent to a window decal. Because the code is static, it keeps working for as long as your network name and password stay the same.
